The seminar will cover live-baiting, dock-fishing and other trophy trout techniques. The boats create depressions in the bottom as they move off and on the davits - the mud in the depression absorbs heat and the trout move there when the water is cold. This time of year, big trout congregate around boat docks. Small trout don't bother the bait, but to a big trout, "they're like an ice cream cone." When targeting big trout, Poveromo uses small pinfish and sand perch. One problem with using shrimp for bait is it attracts a lot of small trout, as well as other species. Poveromo prefers to just wind the line tight when he gets a bite, and he doesn't lift the rod tip until he feels resistance from the trout. Trout have soft mouths, and a violent set will usually lose more fish than it hooks. "When you're fishing an area where there's not many trout, little things make a difference." "It's one thing when you're fishing an area with tons of trout," Poveromo said. He hooks the shrimp much like a pre-rigged plastic worm used for bass, threading in the hook at the tail so the hook's point exits in the middle of the shrimp's legs. To further avoid spooking trout, Poveromo uses light tackle: 6-pound line with a 12-pound leader and a No.
